Brief Posting Description

This is a high-visibility position within Newfield’s Rocky Mountain Business Unit Leadership Team.  Plans, directs and coordinates all Land Department work within the Business Unit.

Detailed Description

  • Provide day to day management and oversight of the Business Unit Land staff and Independent Brokers.

  • Project management comprised of directing & working multiple, concurrent projects within the frame work of a cross-disciplinary team to achieve Business Unit goals by providing the required technical land leadership.  

  • Land support for coordination of any regulatory, environmental, marketing or legal issues.

  • Direct negotiations and preparation of CA’s, joint operating agreements, farm-out agreements, exploration joint ventures, unitization agreements, and other agreements related to exploration and production projects.

  • Oversight & preparation of recommendations and formal presentations to management.

  • Coordination and communication of business development activities with other departments.

  • Monitor local, state and federal regulations and developments affecting the oil and gas industry and serve as the Company’s contact with mineral boards and regulatory bodies regarding company land matters.

  • Identify and evaluate lease play, A&D and third party exploration projects for potential participation through industry contacts and professional association participation.

  • Provide required land support for analyzing and documenting resource assessments on a regional or area-specific scale.

  • Maintain knowledge base of significant lease, drilling & completion activity within targeted exploration, assessment & development areas of interest.  

  • Perform annual performance reviews of the Land Staff.

  • Coordinate Business Unit activities as a liaison with the Vice President-Land and the Corporate Land Manager to ensure budget compliance and proper resource allocation for projects.

Job Requirements

  • Advanced legal knowledge and expertise in structuring, drafting & negotiating complex contracts.

  • Excellent analytical skills and the ability to work closely with legal to interpret and analyze all types of oil and gas agreements and documents.

  • Effective communication & interpersonal skills for management of staff and day to day coordination of internal & external land responsibilities.

  • Advanced knowledge of unconventional resource play operational issues & contracts.

  • Experience with M&A, A&D transactions, including drafting and negotiation of Purchase & Sale Agreements.

  • Knowledge of land function data base systems and processes required to effectively manage Business Unit assets.

  • Knowledge of multiple State, Federal & Indian regulations within the Rocky Mountain Basin province, including Force Pooling Statutes.

  • BBA in Petroleum Land Management or Energy Management.

  • Minimum of 15 years professional experience with an active E&P Industry Company.
